Charles Force, to Allegra Van Alen

Charles Force is a recurring character in the first cycle of the Blue Bloods series. He is the current reincarnation of the archangel Michael, and one of the two Uncorrupted, along with his partner Gabrielle.

Born to Cordelia Van Alen, he came into this cycle as the twin brother of Allegra. Upon the awakening of their angelic soul, he and his sister were supposed to renew their eternal bond, but Allegra decided she would not do so, having fallen in love with her human familiar. Charles thus cast aside his family heritage, taking on the name Force and accepting Trinity Burden as his wife in this cycle. He later fathered the twin Angels of the Apocalypse, Azrael and Abbadon, to renew faith in his leadership.

Appearance[]

Charles Force is described in the books as exceptionally handsome, polished, and powerful-looking. He is tall and lean with black hair, graying throughout the book series. He has gray eyes, and stands at 5'10 tall. His face is liked to a Greek god, with perfect cheekbones and a aristocratic look. He is often described as otherworldly.

Biography[]

Charles Edgar Van Alen Force is the latest reincarnation of Michael, Pure of Heart, is one of the Blue Blood universe's most powerful and central figures. As the Supreme Commander of the Lord's Armies, the Prince of Angels, one half of the celestial pair known as the Uncorrupted, and leader to the New York Coven, Charles has lived countless lifetimes as a guiding force for the Coven, frequently at odds with his twin and bondmate, Gabrielle.

Past lives[]

War Of Heaven[]

Michael was one of the chief figures in the War of Heaven. When Lucifer rebelled against the Almighty, Michael led the Lord's armies against him. The battle raged, many powerful angels were fighting along Lucifer, causing Lucifer to nearly claim victory. At the crucial moment, Abbadon and Azrael, Lucifer's most loyal warriors, betrayed him and knelt to Michael, turning the tide of the conflict.

Lucifer lost the battle. The Almighty expelled Lucifer and the angels who sided with him out of Paradise and sent them to Earth. They were to live as vampires, having been deprived of many privileges. Gabrielle, Michael's bondmate, couldn't bear to see her people depart. She decided to accompany them on their voyage to Earth, hoping to eventually lead them back to Paradise. Michael couldn't face the thought of losing his bondmate, so he joined her on Earth, forming the Uncorrupted, the only vampires that freely walk the Earth.

Memes (Egypt)[]

Menes was one of Michael's first known incarnations, serving as the first divine monarch of unified Egypt and founding the First Dynasty. Along with Meni (Gabrielle), this was a golden age of peace and order. They established Blue Blood Society and represented Michael and Gabrielle's original bond. In this incarnation, their spiritual and romantic relationship became completely realized, and their authority remained unchallenged.

This was the period in which the code of the vampires were first conceived, with Gabrielle and Michael crafting the foundational ethics and spiritual laws to govern Blue Blood society. Gabrielle believed with these sets of rules, Blue Bloods can one day return to their home in paradise. This is also the period where the life cycle structure was defined, expression, expulsion, and evolution.

“Together, Gabrielle and Michael established the Code of the Vampires, a foundation of rules that would govern their community through the centuries, and help them to forge a way back to their glorious home in Paradise.”

Cassius ( Rome)[]

Michael was reincarnated as Cassius, a senator and military general who led the Blue Bloods through one of the most violent and politically volatile times in vampire history. This was the first known appearance of Lucifer in corporeal form, as he assumed the name of Gaius Caligula, Rome's terrible and brutal emperor. Gabrielle, was reincarnated as Junia Terese during this cycle. Her and Cassius were bonded.

Cassius, suspecting the emperor's actual identity, began devising a strategy to combat the mounting Silver Blood menace. Caligula finds one of the Paths of the Dead beneath Lutetia. Cassius proposes they build a gate, claiming it would make it easier for them to access hell. Cailgula went along with the plan, not wanting to blow his cover as Lucifer.

In the final confrontation of the Roman cycle. Lucifer steals the key to the gate, believing he has won and is set to release Hell on earth. This was a trick by Cassius. With the help of Agrippina (Azrael) and her twin Valerius (Abbadon) they fought Lucifer, trying to trap him behind the gates. As a last ditch effort, Caligula took hold of Junia and held her as a hostage to prevent Cassius from striking the killing blow. Cassius was forced to choose between duty and love: destroy Lucifer or save Junia's life. He spared Lucifer to save Junia, letting the Morningstar to slip into the shadows. Cassius claimed victory and stated they successfully trapped Lucifer behind the Gates of Promise. Him and Junia were the only ones to know the truth, which caused distrust between them.

After the war, Cassius created the Venator's, a secret team of vampires that were tasked with finding and killing Silver Bloods. The larger Blue Bloods community did not know of the Silver Bloods presence, the coven did not want them to panic. He also ordered the Blue Bloods to locate the six other paths around the world and build gates upon them to secure the path between worlds.

“After Rome, Michael ordered the Blue Bloods to locate the six other paths and build gates upon them to secure the divisions between the worlds and keep Earth safe from the creatures of the underworld.”

Andreas del Pollaiuolo ( Florence)[]

In Renaissance Florence, Michael reincarnated as Andreas del Pollaiuolo, a nobleman and defender of the Italian Coven. He created a team of Venators to find and kill the remaining Silver Bloods, Tomasia Foasri (Gabrielle) and Giovanni Rushtici were among some of the greatest Venators in this team. After investigating Silver Blood attacks, they discovered that Lucifer has come back and has been creating Nephilim's with human females. They start to dig deeper and discover that Andreas is not Michael, but is Lucifer.

After learning this, Tomasia was devastated. Gio was there for her and told her he suspected of Lucifers true identify for some time now. The two begin to grow close and Gio claimed to be the true reincarnate of Michael. Tomasia believed him and the two were bonded. While Gio was away, Andreas returned, claiming to be Michael. Tomasia was shocked and sickened by this. Andreas explained that Gio was actually Lucifer in disguise and implanted false information about Andreas to gain trust in the coven. Andreas explained that they defeated Lucifer and have successfully trapped him behind the Gates of Promise, which was their original plan in Rome. While Tomasia was relieved to have Andreas back, she knew she was bonded to Gio and found out she was pregnant with his child.

She told Andreas, but did not want harm to come to her child, stating she already loved them. Andreas was infuriated and trapped Tomasia in a room for much of her pregnancy. During this time Andreas and his friend Ludivivo (Metatron) created a plan to kill the child and erase Tomasia's memories of the event. Tomasia tried her hardest to fight but the child was taken and her memories were erased, although fragments of the birth were still present. The child was given to Patrizio (Malakai) to be killed. Luddivio implanted a false memory of Tomasia getting attacked by a Silver Blood and falling into a coma, explaining the large time gap. Although the memories of her bond to Lucifer weren't erased.

"You need not to worry," "I will take care of everything, Patrizio will see to it."

Ludivivo

Myles Standish (Plymouth)[]

Michael returned in the New World as Myles Standish, one of the founders of the Plymouth Colony and the new American Coven. With Rose Standish (Gabrielle) at his side, Myles helped reestablish the Blue Blood presence after years of decline in Europe. The Blue Bloods begin to thrive in the new World. Myles and Rose had fourteen children, with seven sets of twins. This was an act of restoration after the devastation in Rome.

During this time, a significant event in Blue Blood history occurred: the Roanoke Mass Disappearance. The entire Coven community vanished without a trace, which was subsequently proven to be the result of Silver Blood infiltration. Michael, as Myles, refused to believe the Silver Bloods had returned and ignored Carver's warnings. His failure to act resulted in the annihilation of the whole Roanoke colony, a tragedy that would haunt vampire history for generations. A white vote was called by Myles, who argued John Carver (Lawrence) was spreading lies about the sliver bloods and wanted to being the blue bloods back to the old ages. The Conclave sided with Myles, and he was put in place as Regis.

“The Conclave sided with Myles, and Carver was removed. His name faded from official records, though some historians believe he was right.”

Legacy of Light[]

The Uncorrupted[]

As Michael, Pure of Heart, he stood at the Almighty's right hand. He was made out of light and justice, as the embodiment of divine order and the sword of Heaven's will. He is one of the original seven archangels. He was tasked with heading the heavenly force during the War in Heaven, in which Lucifer, his brother, rebelled against the celestial crown. Michael vanquished Lucifer and banished him from Paradise, winning eternal fame and the adoration of the faithful angels. After the battle and banishing the angels that sided with Lucifer. Gabrielle decided to walk the earth with the fallen, wanting to be a guide to them and hopefully restore their presence in Paradise. Michael did not want to stay in Paradise without her, he decided to follow her to earth.

Triumphing in Rome[]

During the height of the Roman Empire, Cassius a powerful general and revered leader in the Blue Blood Senate. This was one of his most historically significant lifetimes, since it marked the first major clash between the Coven and the Silver Bloods in human history, as well as the moment when Lucifer fully revealed himself as a direct danger to the order of Heaven and Earth.

Lucifer, in the persona of Gaius Caligula, had entered the Roman nobility and achieved power as a corrupt emperor. His craziness, violence, and growing strength were indicators of the Silver Blood taint, and it was during this cycle that the Blue Bloods understood he was more than just a renegade vampire – he was the Morningstar himself, returning to complete what he started in Heaven. Michael, as Cassius, organized a secret military operation with the assistance of Gabrielle and other loyalist angels to expel Lucifer once more. He started constructing a Gate that accessed Hell, for them to use to trap Lucifer. He told these plans to Gaius, wanting to bait him into thinking the Gate would be a gateway for him to travel between worlds. During the final battle, Lucifer threatened to harm Gabrielle , the hostage he had stolen. With the divine sword poised for the kill, Michael was forced to choose between destroying the enemy forever and saving the soul he had been tied to for eternity. He chose Gabrielle. He lowered his sword to save her life, but in doing so, he allowed Lucifer to survive and flee into the shadows. Gabrielle started to doubt Michaels judgement.

Cassius knew after the battle Gaius would try to access the Gates in hopes of releasing Hell on earth. Stealing the key and thinking he won, Lucifer traveled to the gate deep in Lutetia. Cassius, with the help of Azrael and Abbadon were able to ambush Lucifer and trap him in the Gate of Hell. After this event, Cassius built six other gates, closing the remaining paths to Hell.

"you should have let me die. Because you chose me, evil was allowed to endure."

Allegra Van Alen

Leaving Europe and settling in America[]

Following centuries of unrest and the devastation of the Great War against the Silver Bloods, Michael—then known as Myles Standish—led the next great migration of the Blue Bloods from Europe to the New World. Myles Standish and his bondmate Gabrielle—then known as Rose Standish—arrived in Plymouth Colony on the Mayflower in the early seventeenth century. They founded a new American Coven while disguised as Puritan settlers, concealing their true natures and assisting in the formation of the young colony.

They thrived in this new World. Settling colonies and beginning to build the foundation for the new American Coven. Myles and Rose took it upon themselves to restore the Blue Blood line after years of decline in Europe. They had fourteen children together, including seven sets of twins.

This new World was not without fear, as a few months following settlings in the new World. The Roanoke colony went missing, with only one word carved into a tree, Croatian. This frightened the current Regis John Carver and his wife Catherine. They warned the other Blue Bloods of the pending doom. Myles disregarded this fear and brushed it off as lies from John, also claiming John was trying to take them back to the old ages. With this new found political power, Myles called a White Vote; a sacred and rare event in Blue Blood society that allowed all vampires to vote on their leader. He was elected Regis of the new American Coven. Under his command the Blue Bloods began to flourish, embracing the hope of Paradise and dismissing the lingering threat of the Sliver Bloods.

“In the New World, they would begin again. Myles and Rose Standish brought light to a land still cloaked in shadow, laying the foundation for a new Coven that would one day rival Eden itself.”

Current incarnation[]

Early life[]

Charles Force and his twin Allegra were both born, in this cycle, to Cordelia Van Alen and Lawrence Van Alen, who were delighted and honoured to be given the privilege of raising the Uncorrupted. Charles was born to great wealth and influence. As the reborn of Michael and future Regis of the Coven, his childhood was marked by very strict education and deep tradition. From a very early age he understood his role in the Blue Bloods community. This could not be said for his twin, Allegra. Who often would get annoyed from Charles bringing up their past and their angelic identity.

Allegra could not bare Cordelia overbearing nature anymore, she transferred from Duchesne to Endicott Academy. In hopes of getting away from her over-controlling mother. Charles transferred with her, not wanting to be so far away from her. Unlike Allegra, Charles did not have an issue with his cycle parents. He often confided in Cordelia and respected her. His relationship with Allegra was already strained from their past lives. She could not forgive herself for the Rome incident and did not feel worthy of Charles love for her. Charles tried to be there for Allegra, helping her in anyway he could. Allegra did not like this, since Charles was always reminding her of their legacy and their past. Allegra just wanted to be treated like a normal girl for the time being.

Charles and Allegra's relationship became more strained when Allegra met Stephen Chase, a fellow classmate. Charles could see Allegra quickly developing strong feelings for him. Charles got jealous, but reminded himself that their paths would ultimately cross. Cordelia also assured him of his internal bond with Allegra. She later became very distant from him and the world following her vision of the future. Charles tried to be comfort her. After this Allegra accepted his love and her role in Blue Blood society, fearing what the future might bring if she decided on another path.

For years Allegra and Charles stood among each other, even making a stunning debut at the Four Hundred Ball. Presenting themselves as Michael and Gabrielle, The archangels. Allegra continued to distance herself from Charles over her love of Stephen.

A broken bond[]

After years of growing apart from Charles, Allegra made the decision to break her bond to him and marry Stephen. She later went on to have a child with him. This sent shockwaves through the Coven and irrevocably changed Charles's life forever. Blinded by his heartbreak, he denounced the Van Alen name and adopted the surname Force. Leaving behind the betrayal and heartache that the Van Alen name held.

Breaking the bond was a capital offense under the Code of the Vampire, punishable by eternal death. Charles did not call for Allegra's execution. Stating that Allegra was in a coma, she could not fight for herself. Acting from his position as Regis, he quietly changed the laws as well. Allowing Allegra to return to the Coven without facing death, this was never seen before. He still had great love for her, often kneeling beside her hospital and begging for forgiveness.

“I still love you,” he told her. “I will always love you, and that is all that matters.”

Charles Force, to Allegra Van Alen

Building an empire[]

After his relationship with Allegra Van Alen ended, Charles Force abandoned the Van Alen name and established himself as the leader of the Force dynasty. He sold his stake of the Van Alen Trust and put his money into building a strong multimedia empire that would soon hold worldwide power.

The Force News Network, a transnational corporation with assets in television, cable, newspapers, radio, and publishing, serves as the hub of this empire. Under his leadership, the network became one of the most influential voices in modern media, impacting not only news and entertainment but also molding political conversation around the world. Charles expanded his media empire to include a profitable publishing arm with best-selling celebrity autobiographies, as well as television and tabloid divisions that gained national prominence. These businesses not only solidified his reputation as a media mogul, but also served as strategic assets for the Blue Bloods. Charles used Force Communications to gently control public narratives and downplay supernatural controversies, effectively maintaining vampire secrecy in the Red Blood universe.

Charles' impact expanded beyond the media and into political spheres. He was on the boards of several Fortune 500 corporations and had a direct impact on government policy, most notably by helping elect Forsyth Llewellyn to the New York Senate seat. He also formed the New York Institute for Policy Research, a conservative research tank that expanded his ideological influence. During his time as Regis, Charles founded and enlarged the New York Blood Bank, which undertook significant medical research into blood-borne diseases—a subtle but important resource for Blue Blood health and surveillance.

Despite the size of his empire, Charles' rule was not without controversy. Without the spiritual support of his angelic counterpart, Gabrielle, Regis' decisions were frequently called into doubt. In response, and to underline his standing within the Coven, Charles formalized his public existence by marrying Trinity Burden, a respected member of the Conclave. They initiated the return of the Apocalyptic twin angels for the present cycle, giving birth to Benjamin (Jack) and Madeleine (Mimi) Force. These twins, born into power and prophecy, represented both legacy and intentional rejuvenation, extending the Force lineage and cementing Charles' place at the center of vampire society.

“In this cycle he divested his share of the Van Alen trust to build a new multimedia company. His Force News Network spans the globe and wields an incomparable influence upon every aspect of human interaction, from news to politics to sports to entertainment.”

Role in the Series[]

Blue Bloods[]

Charles Force is the current Regis of the New York Coven and the most recent cycle incarnation of Michael, Pure of Heart—the Blue Bloods' leader.

Charles is portrayed as a strong, imposing character whose authority is rarely challenged, but his reign is not without controversy. His strict leadership and persistent belief that the Silver Bloods are extinct set him at odds with the rest of the Coven, particularly Cordelia Van Alen, who believes differently. He owns multiple highly successful businesses and rules the Coven with a firm fist. He is married to Trinity Burden and has brought the return of the twin angels of the Apocalypse for the current cycle, Jack and Mimi Force.

He first interacts directly with Schuyler Van Alen and Bliss Llewellyn when they approach him outside the Four Seasons restaurant. They plead for his help in clearing Dylan Ward's name, who has been falsely accused of murdering Aggie Carondolet. Though initially dismissive, Charles assures them that Dylan is no longer in danger and that the situation has been resolved through Committee channels. Despite the growing evidence and concerns, Charles continues to deny the return of the Sliver Bloods. Claiming these deaths are isolated incidents.

Later in the novel he reveals critical truths to Jack and Mimi regarding Schuyler Van Alen's heritage. He explains Schuyler is a product of a forbidden union between Allegra Van Alen and her human familiar, Stephen Chase. This makes Schuyler a unique being. Charles states she is not supposed to be exist in their world.

We start to get some information about his relationship with Allegra. When Schuyler and Jack go to the hospital to confront Charles, confusing him for a Sliver Blood. We see him kneeing beside Allegra's bed, pleading for her to return to him and begging for forgive.

By the end of the book, Charles refusal to acknowledge the threat of the Sliver Bloods culminates in a White Vote, called by the Carondolet family. They argue that while Charles ignores these threats, their kind are dying. The Coven does not agree with them and do not vote against Charles.

“I admit nothing,” Charles declared haughtily. “There could be other explanations for his actions. Dylan could still be acting on his own. It does happen once in a while. Dementia. The Sunset Years are volatile ones for our kind.”

Charles Force

By the end of the book, Cordelia, Charles's cycle mother; was attacked by a Sliver Blood. During her final conversation with Schuyler, she tells her granddaughter important information about the Van Alen family. Cordelia explains the history of Gabrielle and Michael. The two archangels that chose to walk the earth as vampires. They were reincarnated as twins, Allegra and Charles Van Alen in this cycle. Allegra denounced her bond to Charles and married a human and Schuyler's father, Stephen Chase. After this event, Charles left the Van Alen name behind and started to go by Charles Force.

He has a strong love for his bond-mate Allegra, despite her leaving him for her human familiar. In the first book Charles can be seen crying over Allegra, begging her to come back to him. Throughout the books we find him to be more of a tragic figure, unable to express his vulnerability. He is mentioned to have a caring side to his children Mimi and Jack, while not to be have shown. Relationships[]

Romances[]

Gabrielle

Gabrielle was Michael's eternal bondmate since the beginning of time. They are two of the seven archangels who serve the Almighty. After waging war on the Almighty for the control of Paradise, Lucifer was defaulted. He and the other angels that fought beside him were expelled from Paradise and sent to Earth to live out their lives as vampires. Gabrielle couldn't bear to see her people leave and decided to follow them, leading them so that one day they could return to Paradise. Michael couldn't stand to be apart from his love, so he joined her on the path to earth. becoming the Uncorrupted, angels who decided to descend to Earth.

Their love was tested in Rome when Lucifer returned as emperor Caligula. When he was discovered, he raged war on the Blue Bloods. At the critical moment, Michael spared Lucifer's life in order to save Gabrielle, letting him escape. Gabrielle never forgave him, but went along with his lies of Lucifer being trapped behind the Gate of Promise out of fear for her people. This decision haunted the couple for the rest of time.

During the Florence cycle, their relationship took an abrupt turn. Lucifer disguised himself as Michael's reincarnation, bonding with Gabrielle and fathering a child. The real Michael returned, and Gabrielle told him the truth. Michael was outraged and swiftly took hold of Gabrielle for the remainder of her pregnancy. Gabrielle attempted to fight back, explaining that she did not want the child to be harmed because they were innocent. Michael collected his allies and gave Gabrielle's child away to be slaughtered. He also removed her memory of the entire incident. Gabrielle awoke with no memory but the feeling that something was being kept from her.

Gabrielle and Michael's relationship remained constant over the years. Gabrielle continued to distrust Michael and his ploys, but she went along with them, trusting his actions. During the Plymouth cycle, the journey to America became malicious. The entire Roanoke colony disappeared, and the word "Croatan" was left on a tree. Panic ensued, believing that the Silver Bloods and Lucifer had returned. The Regis attempted to warn the others, but Michael intervened and claimed it was all nonsense and lies intended to scare the Blue Bloods. During this cycle, Michael took up Regis. While Gabrielle stood by his side, they fathered 14 children together in an attempt to repopulate their species. She could not help but sense something was off, not wanting to alarm her people, she kept it to herself.

In the twentieth century, Gabrielle and Michael were reincarnated as Allegra and Charles Van Alen. Allegra later changed schools to avoid their cycle mother, Cordelia, but Charles followed suit. Allegra grew close to Stephen Bendix Chase, a Red Blood. Charles became increasingly anxious as Allegra developed feelings for Stephen. He tried to stay close to her, but Allegra became frustrated by his fascination with their angelic past. Following an incident with Stephen, Allegra briefly recommitted to Charles and attempted to fulfill her position as bondmate. However, before they could bond, Allegra fled with Stephen, shocking the Coven and breaking her lifelong pledge.

Charles hunted her down and discovered that her feelings for Stephen were genuine. He left her, heartbroken and ill from their broken bond. Allegra paid him a visit and asked for the truth about their past, suspecting that something was still hidden. Charles argued that she already knew everything. When Allegra learned his falsehood, she officially ended the relationship and married Stephen. Allegra discovered she was pregnant after Stephen passed away. She gave birth to her daughter Schuyler and soon fell into a self-imposed coma. Charles paid her regular visits and begged for forgiveness.

After Lucifer and the Silver Bloods returned, Charles became stuck in the white darkness after a battle with them, a place between worlds. Allegra awoke from her coma, realizing Charles was in danger. She tracked him down and asked for the final time the truth about their past. Charles finally told Allegra, and she was crushed. She claimed Lucifer's return was the result of Charles' weakness and lies, allowing evil to flourish once more. They banded together for the final struggle against Lucifer. Following his default, they formed a union and assisted the vampires in returning to Paradise.

Trinity Force

After Allegra broke their bond, Charles was left heart broken and was humiliated in front of the entire Coven. To better suite his political standing, he married Trinity Burden, a high Coven member. Their union was sanctioned only in the human sense, they were not bonded. He presumably chose Trinity since her bondmate died during Rome. They shared a common pain in losing their bondmate. They both saw their marriage as more of a political tool then love. They later called forth the spirits of Abbadon and Azrael, parenting them for this cycle. Their cycle daughter Mimi (Azrael) noted how her parents marriage were more related to human then Blue Blood. With both having affair's and even taking their lovers to social events. Trinity played her part standing by Charles's side. Often representing them in many Blue Blood events. She took over Charles's company after his disappearance and continued to support him til the end.

Quotes[]

Cordelia: "Always the first to shy away from the truth. You are the way you have always been, arrogant and blind..."
Charles Force: "And if we had listened to you and sown the fear? Where would we be then? You would have us cowering in caves."
Cordelia: "I would have had us ensuring our survival. Instead, we are vulnerable once more. Instead, they are allowed to return, to hunt. If I had the authority, if the Conclave had listened to me, to Teddy..."
Charles Force: "But they did not, they chose me to lead, as I have always done."
— Cordelia and Charles' heated exchange.

Cordelia: "There is still time. We may still stop them, if you would only find it in your heart to forgive. Gabrielle..."
Charles: "Do not speak to me of Gabrielle. Never. I would never hear her name spoken to me again. Especially from you."
Cordelia: "It has been fifteen years. Is that not long enough?"
— Cordelia, trying to reason with her son.

Notes[]

  • Charles is first said to be sixty in Blue Bloods.[1] This is however later proven wrong, as his birthdate is listed as August 24, 1969, making him about forty. This is probably due to breaking of his bond with Allegra.[2]
  • In the books, it is stated Gabrielle has 5 known past lives, where Michael only has 4.
