Ingrid Beauchamp's diary was offered to her as a departure gift from her co-workers at Cornell.

It is described as an ancient, unused leather-bound captain's logbook. The left-hand pages display a ghost of grid (which was used by the captain to log the dayof the week, speed, wind and compass directions) whereas the right-hand pages are left blank for comments. The diary has a gold-leaf compass on its worn leather cover.
