The Van Alen mansion, located on Riverside Drive, is one of the last remaining properties of the once-prestigious Van Alen family.

History[]

Once the most powerful and inluential family in New York City, the Van Alens's prestige and wealth declined drastically in the last decades. Once they were no longer able to keep all of their properties, including their residence of Fifth Avenue, the family was forced to retreat into their Riverside Drive mansion.

Appearance[]

Set on Riverside Drive, a Parisian-style boulevard dotted with Italian Renaissance mansions and Art Deco apartment buildings, the Van Alen mansion sits on the corner of 101st and Riverside Drive. Styled in the French fashion, guarded by goargoyles on the balcony level, the house is made in gray stones and has a wrought-iron door. Nonetheless, the house's original grandeur has not been impervious to the assaults of time. As pointed by Schuyler, a new roof and a coat of paint would greatly contribute to restoring the house to its former glory.

The mansion has suffered from the assaults of time on the inside, too, and a certain lack of maintenance surely aggravated the situation: the Persian rugs were covered in dust, the large bay windows overlooking the Hudson River were always obstructed by thick velvet curtains, and the home's seven bedrooms were mostly locked and unused, the furniture being draped underneath fabric.

Schuyler's room is the house's sole bright spot, its walls being painted in Moutain Dew yellow.
